Description
Rendered in posterior anatomical position, the male central nervous system sits on the midline with the brain superiorly and the spinal cord descending through the vertebral canal into the lumbosacral region. Paired spinal nerves exit segmentally and immediately form the dorsal and ventral rami, creating dense peripheral branching across the posterior trunk and into the upper and lower limbs. In the shoulder region, nerve bundles converge toward the brachial plexus and continue distally as major terminal nerves into the arm and hand. Inferiorly, fibers assemble into the lumbosacral plexus, then course into the thigh and leg as long peripheral trunks with progressively finer distal branches. A posterior full-body nerve map is the cleanest way to teach the segmental logic behind dermatomes and myotomes, because you can trace a sensory distribution back to a specific spinal level without the distraction of anterior viscera. It also supports clinical localization: a foot drop can be framed as L5 radiculopathy versus common fibular (peroneal) neuropathy at the fibular neck, and a scapular winging discussion lands better when students can follow the long thoracic nerve’s long, superficial course along the thoracic wall. One midline structure anchors the whole pattern. That anchor is the cord.
