Description
Centered on the cranial base, the occipital bone forms the posterior floor of the neurocranium around the foramen magnum, with the basilar part lying anterior to it and the squamous part rising posteriorly toward the internal occipital protuberance. Lateral to the foramen magnum, the occipital condyles project inferiorly to articulate with the atlas, while the jugular processes meet the petrous temporal bone at the petro-occipital fissure. A blue highlight marks the squamous part of the temporal bone on the lateral wall, framing the posterior margin of the middle cranial fossa and abutting the occipitomastoid region. Adjacent foramina and canals, including the jugular foramen region and the hypoglossal canal near the condyles, sit in predictable relationship to these bony landmarks.
