Description

Obliquely oriented male cranium is presented with the temporal bone emphasized, bringing the squamous part into view superior to the zygomatic arch and anterior to the mastoid process. Posterior to the external acoustic meatus, the mastoid portion and its tip sit inferolateral to the posterior cranial fossa margin, while the zygomatic process projects anteriorly to contribute to the zygomatic arch at the lateral orbital rim. Along the cranial base, the petrous part forms a dense wedge between the middle and posterior cranial fossae, positioned anteromedial to the mastoid and lateral to the clivus region. This angle matters because it ties surface landmarks to the temporal bone’s deeper corridors: the external acoustic meatus leads to the middle ear, and the petrous ridge marks the course toward the internal acoustic meatus where CN VII and CN VIII traverse. Surgeons planning mastoidectomy, tympanoplasty, or translabyrinthine approaches need these spatial relationships clear, since the facial nerve runs in close proximity to the middle ear and mastoid air cell system and is vulnerable during drilling.
