Description
Seen through a cut calvarial section, the superior sagittal sinus runs in the midline along the attached margin of the falx cerebri, seated in the sagittal sulcus of the frontal, parietal, and occipital bones. Semi-transparent dura mater drapes the inner table, with the arachnoid mater closely apposed beneath it and cortical gyri and sulci of the cerebral hemispheres visible deep to the meningeal layers. Superficial cerebral veins converge superiorly toward the sinus, and the venous channel tracks posteriorly toward the confluence of sinuses near the internal occipital protuberance. Bone windows and cavities, including the orbital and nasal apertures, provide orientation within the skull. For teaching cranial venous drainage, this cutaway offers a clean read on why the superior sagittal sinus is a dural venous sinus rather than a true vein, and how its rigid walls relate to the periosteal and meningeal layers of dura. That distinction matters in practice: bridging veins entering the sinus are a common source of subdural hematoma after acceleration injury, while injury to the sinus itself can produce difficult-to-control hemorrhage during parasagittal craniotomy or vertex trauma. Arachnoid granulations along the sinus also explain the classic parasagittal distribution of meningiomas and the imaging finding of granular impressions on the inner table.
