Description
Anterior anatomy of an adult male upper-body vasculature is presented with the heart centered in the mediastinum and the great vessels radiating superiorly through the thoracic inlet and laterally into the shoulder girdles. Superior to the cardiac silhouette, the ascending aorta continues into the aortic arch, giving rise to the brachiocephalic trunk on the right and the left common carotid and left subclavian arteries, while the internal jugular veins descend on either side to join the subclavian veins and form the brachiocephalic veins. Laterally, the subclavian vessels pass beneath the clavicles and continue as axillary and proximal brachial vessels in the arms, maintaining clear medial to lateral relationships with surrounding thoracic and cervical contours. Color coding distinguishes arteries (red) from veins (blue). For teaching and clinical correlation, this anterior perspective is the fastest way to orient learners to the thoracic inlet, where crowding of the subclavian artery and vein with the brachial plexus explains the vascular component of thoracic outlet syndrome and the vulnerability of the subclavian vessels in clavicle fractures. The layout also mirrors procedural landmarks: central venous access via the subclavian or internal jugular route, and the cephalad course of catheters into the brachiocephalic veins and superior vena cava. Venous asymmetry is a common pitfall.
