Description
Spanning the head, neck, thorax, and upper limbs, the vascular tree is presented with the heart centrally in the mediastinum and the great vessels radiating superiorly and laterally. Superior to the cardiac silhouette, the ascending aorta continues into the aortic arch, giving rise to the brachiocephalic trunk, left common carotid artery, and left subclavian artery, while the venous return converges into the right and left brachiocephalic veins and then the superior vena cava entering the right atrium. Along the neck, the common carotid arteries ascend anterolateral to the trachea toward the internal and external carotid distributions, mirrored by the internal jugular veins in the carotid sheath. Laterally, the subclavian vessels pass beneath the clavicle to become axillary and brachial vessels, with more distal arterial and venous branching suggested in the upper limb. Emphasis on venous drainage makes this angle useful for teaching central venous pathways and their common access routes, where the internal jugular and subclavian veins unite posterior to the sternoclavicular joints to form the brachiocephalic veins, a practical landmark when discussing central venous catheter placement and catheter tip positioning near the cavoatrial junction. It also supports clinical correlation with superior vena cava syndrome, in which obstruction of the SVC leads to venous engorgement in the head, neck, and upper extremities and collateral flow via thoracic wall channels.
