Description
Spanning the male upper body, the illustration traces arterial and venous pathways from the heart through the neck, thorax, and upper limbs. From the ascending aorta and aortic arch, the brachiocephalic trunk, left common carotid artery, and left subclavian artery arise superiorly, with carotid branches ascending to the cranial cavity while the subclavian continues laterally as the axillary artery and then the brachial artery in the arm, dividing distally into the radial and ulnar arteries. Venous return runs in parallel, with superficial and deep veins converging into the axillary and subclavian veins, then the brachiocephalic veins and superior vena cava; the internal jugular veins descend medial to the sternocleidomastoid region toward the thoracic inlet. Color contrast separates arteries and veins for rapid orientation. Aortic-arch branching is a frequent teaching stumbling block, and this layout clarifies laterality and sequence, including the right-sided brachiocephalic trunk versus direct left-sided origins. That matters clinically when interpreting CT angiography, planning carotid endarterectomy, or recognizing patterns in subclavian steal syndrome where retrograde vertebral flow can accompany proximal subclavian stenosis. Central venous access also lives in this territory: the relationship of internal jugular and subclavian veins to the superior vena cava corridor is the map behind safe line placement.
