Along its anterosuperior margin, the occipital bone meets the parietal bone at the lambdoid suture, while its anterior border approaches the temporal bone around the mastoid region and occipitomastoid suture. More anteriorly, the zygomatic arch, orbit, and nasal aperture remain visible as positional references, with the mandible seated at the temporomandibular joint and the dentition shown in occlusion. Orientation is unambiguous. Clinically, this lateral view gives clean access to surface landmarks used in trauma assessment and posterior fossa planning, including the external occipital protuberance (inion) and the nuchal lines, which guide midline posterior approaches and muscle attachment mapping. Fracture lines across the occiput commonly propagate toward the lambdoid suture or into the posterior cranial base, and recognizing the occipital-temporal junction helps when considering involvement of adjacent structures such as the mastoid air cells and the sigmoid sinus groove deep to this region.
