Description
Lateral skull anatomy is presented with the parietal bone highlighted, occupying the superolateral calvaria between the frontal bone anteriorly and the occipital bone posteriorly. Its inferior margin meets the squamous part of the temporal bone at the squamous suture, while the superior border approaches the sagittal suture along the cranial midline, and the posterior border tracks toward the lambdoid suture. Surface landmarks such as the parietal eminence and the superior and inferior temporal lines sit on the external table, with the orbit, nasal aperture, maxilla, mandible, and dentition providing anterior facial context. The cervical spine extends inferiorly from the cranial base, with the upper cervical segments aligned beneath the occiput and the intervertebral discs separating the subaxial vertebrae. Color-coding the parietal region helps orient common trauma patterns and neurosurgical entry points, because parietal fractures often traverse sutural lines and can be assessed relative to the pterion region where the frontal, parietal, temporal, and sphenoid bones converge. Small errors in localization matter. Burr hole placement for evacuation of extra-axial hematoma, planning of parietal craniotomy corridors, and teaching the relationship of the parietal bone to the underlying dura and meningeal vessel grooves all benefit from a clean side view that preserves the adjacent temporal bone and cranial base landmarks.
