Description
Rendered in lateral profile, the female occipital bone is isolated in blue along the posterior and inferoposterior cranium, curving from the lambdoid suture superiorly toward the cranial base inferiorly. Its squamous part lies posterior to the parietal bone, while the basilar part extends anteriorly toward the sphenoid, framing the posterior cranial fossa. Inferiorly, the occipital condyle region sits immediately superior to the atlas (C1), and the foramen magnum occupies the central opening where the brainstem transitions to the cervical spinal cord. Cervical vertebrae align beneath the skull, and the maxilla, mandible, and upper dentition remain visible anteriorly for orientation. Lateral appreciation of the occipital bone helps clarify the relationship between the lambdoid suture and the posterior cranial fossa, a frequent teaching point when differentiating sutures from linear skull fractures on radiographs or CT. Occipital trauma can propagate toward the foramen magnum and occipital condyles, where injuries may destabilize the atlanto-occipital joint and threaten lower cranial nerve pathways near the hypoglossal canal and jugular foramen region. A key landmark. The proximity of the upper cervical spine makes the craniovertebral junction anatomy immediately legible, including how head positioning depends on C0 to C1 alignment.
