Posteriorly, the paired parietal bones occupy the superolateral calvaria, meeting each other at the midline along the sagittal suture and descending toward the lambdoid suture where they articulate with the occipital bone inferiorly. Lateral margins approach the squamous part of the temporal bone, defining the parietotemporal region of the cranial vault, while the vertex lies superior to the external occipital protuberance. Inferior to the skull, the cervical spine aligns beneath the occiput, with the atlas (C1) directly supporting the cranium at the atlanto-occipital joints and the remaining cervical vertebrae (C2 to C7) stacked in a gentle lordotic curve. Midline landmarks read cleanly. A posterior perspective on the parietal bone is the fastest way to teach sutural anatomy of the cranial vault, because the sagittal and lambdoid sutures form a readily oriented intersection used to describe fracture trajectories and to localize cranial pathology on physical exam and imaging. Parietal bone fractures are common in blunt head trauma and can cross sutures or propagate along them, a distinction that helps differentiate fractures from accessory sutures or wormian bones at the lambdoid region on CT.
