Description

Arising from the renal hilum, the renal vein (blue) courses medially to join the inferior vena cava, while the renal artery (red) reaches the kidney from the abdominal aorta just posterior to the vein. A posterior perspective places the kidney against the posterior abdominal wall, with the venous segment described immediately anterior to the psoas major, and the suprarenal (adrenal) gland resting superior to the renal pole. Inferiorly, the renal pelvis funnels into the ureter (yellow) as it descends along the medial aspect of the kidney toward the pelvis. Renal capsule and cortex are implied by the organ surface and cut anatomy, with collecting system branches leading back toward the nephron-bearing parenchyma. Posterior relationships matter when you teach or plan retroperitoneal access. The renal vein is short on the right and longer on the left, and its proximity to the psoas and renal artery helps explain why mobilization during nephrectomy, donor nephrectomy, or retroperitoneoscopic approaches demands early vascular control at the hilum. Varicocele workups often start with this anatomy: left renal vein compression between the aorta and superior mesenteric artery (nutcracker syndrome) can elevate gonadal venous pressure and produce a left-sided varicocele in men.
