Shown from a posterior perspective, the left kidney sits lateral to the abdominal aorta, with the left renal artery coursing laterally to enter the deeply recessed renal hilum posterior to the renal vein and anterior to the renal pelvis. Superior to the renal pole, the suprarenal (adrenal) gland caps the kidney, while the ureter descends inferiorly from the pelvis toward the pelvic brim. Segmental branching is suggested as the renal artery approaches the renal sinus, before dividing into interlobar and arcuate arteries that distribute toward the cortex beneath the renal capsule.
