Description
Seen from the posterior thorax of an adult male, the twelve pairs of ribs arc laterally from the thoracic vertebrae and converge anteriorly toward their costal cartilages (not visible from this angle). Each rib head lies medial and posterior, articulating at the costovertebral joints with the vertebral bodies, while the tubercle meets the transverse process at the costotransverse joint; the rib angle is evident as the point where the shaft turns anterolaterally. Centrally, the thoracic spine continues inferiorly into the lumbar vertebrae and sacrum, with the paired iliac crests flanking the sacrum at the posterior pelvis. Blue color emphasis isolates the costal skeleton against the neutral vertebral column and pelvic ring. Posterior rib anatomy is where you teach mechanics and where clinicians localize pain. The rib angle and posterior shaft are common sites of fracture after blunt trauma, and this view helps correlate fracture location with nearby posterior intercostal neurovascular bundles that run along the inferior margin of each rib. Relationships at the costovertebral and costotransverse articulations also matter in inflammatory spondyloarthropathies and degenerative change, where reduced thoracic excursion and focal paraspinal tenderness can be traced to these joints. Use this artwork in gross anatomy and radiologic anatomy teaching when introducing thoracic wall landmarks, vertebrocostal joint orientation, and the difference between true, false, and floating ribs by posterior attachment.
