Description
Medial anatomy of the male lower limb is presented with the saphenous nerve highlighted from its origin in the femoral triangle through the adductor (subsartorial) canal and into the medial leg. After becoming superficial between the sartorius and gracilis region, the nerve courses inferiorly with the great saphenous vein, passing anterior to the medial malleolus before continuing toward the medial foot. Bony landmarks including the pelvis, femur, patella, tibia, fibula, and the tarsal and metatarsal bones provide alignment for the nerve’s long, slender trajectory. Orientation is clear. Tracing the saphenous nerve in a true medial view matters because it is the terminal sensory branch of the femoral nerve and the one most often encountered during procedures along the medial knee and leg. Its infrapatellar branch is a common source of postoperative numbness or painful neuroma after medial parapatellar arthrotomy, hamstring tendon harvest, or portal placement for knee arthroscopy. Distally, the close relationship to the great saphenous vein helps explain paresthesia after saphenous vein cannulation, stripping, or endovenous ablation, and it frames the differential for medial leg pain that spares motor function. Use this plate in anatomy teaching on the femoral triangle and adductor canal, in regional anesthesia education when explaining adductor canal (saphenous nerve) block targets, and in surgical or interventional references that map risk zones for saphenous nerve injury along the medial tibia and ankle.
