Description
Running along the anteromedial leg, the saphenous nerve is shown as the terminal cutaneous branch of the femoral nerve, descending from the medial thigh and passing medial to the knee toward the medial border of the tibia and ankle. Its course parallels the great saphenous vein, which remains superficial in the subcutaneous tissue, while deeper landmarks include the femur, patella, tibia, fibula, and the bony architecture of the foot in anatomical position. Proximally, the nerve relates to the adductor canal region before it emerges to become subcutaneous, then travels inferiorly and distally toward the medial malleolus. Clear medial-lateral relationships are maintained between the anterior tibial crest and the nerve and vein just medial to it. Clinical relevance centers on sensory symptoms. The saphenous nerve is a frequent source of medial knee and medial leg paresthesia after knee arthroscopy, total knee arthroplasty, or trauma, and it is also vulnerable during harvest of the great saphenous vein for coronary artery bypass grafting. This anterior overview also supports teaching the difference between deep venous anatomy and the superficial venous system, since the great saphenous vein remains outside the deep fascia while the nerve transitions from the adductor canal to the superficial plane near the knee. Ideal applications include anatomy and neuroanatomy teaching modules on femoral nerve branches, regional anesthesia instruction when discussing adductor canal (saphenous) nerve block, and surgical education materials for venous access and vein harvesting. It also fits well in orthopedic and vascular publications that need an accurate surface-oriented map for medial leg sensory distribution and superficial venous pathways.
