Description
Running along the posterolateral thigh, the short head of the biceps femoris is isolated against the femur in lateral profile, with its muscular belly arising from the lateral lip of the linea aspera and the lateral supracondylar line roughly midway down the shaft. Distally, its fibers track inferiorly and slightly posteriorly toward the lateral knee, converging on the biceps femoris tendon that inserts on the head of the fibula, just lateral to the proximal tibia. The pelvis, femur, tibia, fibula, and the bones of the ankle and foot remain visible as positional references. Bone and muscle sit in clear register. Distinguishing the short head from the long head matters because it is the only hamstring component that does not originate from the ischial tuberosity, and it is innervated by the common fibular (peroneal) division of the sciatic nerve rather than the tibial division. That neuroanatomic split is a practical teaching point when correlating selective weakness patterns in knee flexion or when localizing nerve injury around the lateral popliteal fossa. The lateral view also frames the tendon’s relationship to the fibular head, a landmark implicated in posterolateral corner injuries and in traction or compression of the common fibular nerve as it winds around the fibular neck.
