Description
Running in a continuous band along the anterior aspect of the vertebral bodies, the anterior longitudinal ligament tracks superior to inferior across multiple motion segments, closely applied to the vertebral endplates and the anterior annulus fibrosus of each intervertebral disc. Posterior to the vertebral bodies, within the vertebral canal, the posterior longitudinal ligament follows the posterior surfaces of the vertebral bodies and discs, narrowing over vertebral bodies and broadening over disc levels. Spanning adjacent laminae, the ligamenta flava form an elastic posterior wall of the canal, while the interspinous and supraspinous ligaments connect the spinous processes in series; facet joint capsules outline the zygapophysial joints laterally where the articular processes meet. A lateral profile makes the segmental stacking and ligament continuity obvious. That sagittal-lateral relationship matters when you teach or plan around flexion and extension mechanics. Hyperextension injuries preferentially strain the anterior longitudinal ligament, whereas flexion loads the posterior ligament complex (supraspinous, interspinous, ligamentum flavum, and facet capsules), a pattern reflected in instability grading after trauma. At disc levels, the posterior longitudinal ligament provides incomplete coverage posterolaterally, helping explain why many lumbar disc herniations migrate posterolaterally toward the traversing nerve root rather than directly posterior into the midline canal. Small structure, big consequence. Use this plate in gross anatomy and musculoskeletal anatomy labs to anchor ligament names to their bony attachments, or in radiology teaching to correlate with the low-signal bands on sagittal MRI and the contours seen on CT reconstructions. It also suits spine surgery and sports medicine materials when describing posterior ligament complex disruption, whiplash, or the biomechanics behind extension-based stenosis symptoms.
