Description
Beneath the body of the mandible, the submandibular gland occupies the submandibular triangle in lateral profile, wrapping around the posterior free margin of the mylohyoid so its superficial part lies inferolateral and its deep part turns medially into the floor of mouth. Adjacent bony landmarks include the mandibular body and angle, the maxilla and nasal bones anteriorly, and the occipital bone posteriorly, with dentition shown in occlusion. A partial cervical spine provides posterior and inferior orientation, helping place the gland relative to the hyoid level and upper neck. Lateral anatomy of the submandibular region matters when you are tracing the course of Wharton’s (submandibular) duct and anticipating where obstruction and inflammation declare themselves. Sialolithiasis most often arises in the submandibular system, and gland enlargement in the submandibular triangle can be mistaken for nodal disease or a branchial cleft anomaly unless you keep the gland’s relationship to the mandibular border and mylohyoid in mind.
