Rendered as a left lateral view of the male cerebral hemisphere, the cortical surface is organized by the major sulci that partition the frontal, parietal, temporal, and occipital lobes. The lateral sulcus (fissura lateralis, Sylvian fissure) cleaves the temporal lobe inferiorly from the frontal and parietal opercula superiorly, while the central sulcus (sulcus centralis) runs roughly superoinferior to separate the precentral gyrus anteriorly from the postcentral gyrus posteriorly. Posterior to the parietal region, the parieto-occipital sulcus is approached near the superoposterior margin and the lateral occipital sulci contour the occipital convexity. Color-traced grooves emphasize sulcal continuity along the convex cortex. A small portion of the brainstem is visible inferiorly, providing orientation to the basal aspect. Lateral sulcal anatomy is the working map for localizing function on the convexity and for communicating lesion location across neurology, neuroradiology, and neurosurgery. The relationship of the central sulcus to the precentral and postcentral gyri frames bedside localization of motor versus somatosensory deficits and guides cortical stimulation planning, while the Sylvian fissure defines the corridor used in a pterional (frontotemporal) craniotomy and helps estimate where the middle cerebral artery territory and perisylvian language cortex lie. Pattern recognition matters. Sulcal effacement along these grooves is also a practical sign of edema or mass effect on CT and MRI, and widening can support cortical atrophy assessments. Use this asset in neuroanatomy and neuropsychology teaching to anchor lobe boundaries, name key sulci, and orient students before introducing medial-surface landmarks and white matter pathways. It also fits cleanly into stroke education materials, epilepsy surgery overviews, and radiology primers that correlate cortical sulci with common MCA distribution deficits and perirolandic seizure semiology.
