Description
Framed within an anteriorly oriented sagittal section of the adult male heart, the superior vena cava descends in the superior mediastinum and enters the right atrium at its superoposterior aspect. From this perspective, the vessel sits to the right of the ascending aorta and anterior to the right pulmonary artery before it blends with the atrial wall at the cavoatrial junction. The sectioned myocardium exposes the right atrium and right ventricle anteriorly, with the tricuspid valve apparatus and chordae tendineae projecting into the right ventricular cavity; deeper in the cut plane, the interventricular septum and left-sided chambers provide midline reference. Color differentiation helps separate venous return from arterial outflow. A sagittal cut paired with an anterior viewpoint clarifies a common point of confusion in teaching: the superior vena cava is not simply a vertical tube but a short, high-flow conduit whose entry into the right atrium lies close to the sinoatrial node region and the interatrial septum.
