Description
Running superior to the orbital rim, the supraorbital vein drains the paramedian forehead and courses inferiorly toward the superomedial orbital margin, where it communicates with the angular vein at the medial canthus and with the ophthalmic venous system within the orbit. An anterior head and neck perspective also places it in relation to the supraorbital artery as it emerges near the supraorbital notch or foramen of the frontal bone, and to the glabella, nasal bones, and the margins of the bony orbit. Superficial facial tributaries converge medially, while deeper channels track posteriorly toward the cavernous sinus via the superior ophthalmic vein. Small connections matter. For teaching and clinical correlation, this venous pathway is the classic example of how the “danger triangle” of the face can provide a route for infection from the forehead and nasal root to intracranial venous sinuses through valveless communications. Periorbital cellulitis, septic cavernous sinus thrombosis, and orbital venous congestion are easier to explain when you can follow the supraorbital vein into the angular vein and ophthalmic veins in a single field. Cosmetic and reconstructive procedures around the brow also depend on respecting the supraorbital neurovascular bundle as it crosses the orbital rim, where venous bleeding can obscure the surgical plane during endoscopic brow lift or laceration repair.
