Description
Arcing across the lateral face and temporal scalp, the superficial temporal vein descends anterior to the auricle and joins the maxillary vein within the parotid region to form the retromandibular vein. Anterior facial drainage tracks along the facial vein, receiving tributaries from the angular vein near the medial canthus and coursing posteriorly toward its junction with the internal jugular system. Superiorly and posteriorly, the occipital and posterior auricular veins converge toward the external jugular vein as it runs superficial to the sternocleidomastoid, while deeper venous channels are suggested adjacent to the cranial base and temporal bone. Orientation is strictly lateral, so superficial collecting trunks sit more anterior and superior, while the jugular pathway occupies the lower posterolateral neck. Lateral venous anatomy of the head matters because these vessels communicate freely across superficial and deep compartments, including emissary connections to dural venous sinuses, a pattern that explains the historical danger triangle concept of facial infection with potential intracranial spread. Parotid and mandibular landmarks are also surgical territory, where the retromandibular vein travels in close relationship to the facial nerve within the parotid gland and becomes a frequent point of reference during parotidectomy and neck dissection planning.
