Seen in lateral profile, the cranial vault and facial skeleton form the bony backdrop for the superficial venous network, including the superficial temporal vein ascending anterior to the auricle and the retromandibular vein descending within the parotid region posterior to the ramus of the mandible. Inferiorly, the external jugular vein tracks obliquely across the sternocleidomastoid, running superficial and lateral to the carotid sheath as it descends toward the root of the neck, while posterior tributaries align near the mastoid region and the upper cervical spine. The mandibular teeth and temporomandibular joint line are rendered in profile, and the cervical vertebrae with intervening intervertebral discs sit posterior to the pharyngeal airway column. Landmarks read cleanly. A lateral venous map like this earns its keep when you need to explain or plan access and injury patterns in the neck. The external jugular vein is a common site for venous cannulation and a visible marker of raised jugular venous pressure, yet its superficial course also makes it vulnerable to laceration and air embolism in penetrating trauma above the clavicle. Relationships at the angle of the mandible matter too, because parotid surgery and facial trauma can disrupt the retromandibular system, and the superficial temporal vein can become prominent in scalp lacerations where hemostasis is deceptively difficult.
