Description
Running obliquely from the transverse processes to the ribs, the levatores costarum are presented as a repeating series along the posterior thoracic wall, positioned deep to the more superficial extrinsic back muscles. Each slip descends inferolaterally from its vertebral attachment to insert on the rib below (brevis) or span to the second rib below (longus), lying lateral to the spinous processes and immediately posterior to the costotransverse joints.
