Description
Arising from the transverse processes of the mid to lower thoracic vertebrae, the levatores costarum descend inferolaterally to insert on the rib immediately below, near the rib’s tubercle and angle. A lateral view of the thorax places these slender muscle slips posterior to the rib cage and lateral to the spinous processes, crossing the costotransverse region in a short, oblique course. Adjacent landmarks you would expect to see include the thoracic vertebral bodies and intervertebral discs, the posterior arcs of the ribs, and portions of the paravertebral muscle mass that frame the costovertebral joints.
