Description
Obliquely oriented levatores costarum are traced as slender muscle slips arising from the transverse processes of the mid to lower thoracic vertebrae and descending inferolaterally to the ribs below near the angulus costae. From this lateral perspective, the thoracic vertebral column sits posterior and medial to the rib cage, while each slip crosses the intercostal space to reach the more lateral rib shaft just posterior to the costal angle. Several ribs, thoracic and upper lumbar vertebrae, and the superior pelvis frame the field so the muscle direction can be read against bony landmarks.
