Description
Centered within the vertebral canal, the spinal cord sits posterior to the vertebral body and anterior to the laminae and spinous process, suspended in cerebrospinal fluid inside the dural sac. Surrounding it in concentric layers are the pia mater closely investing the cord, the arachnoid mater forming the CSF-filled subarachnoid space, and the dura mater defining the outer meningeal boundary. Laterally, the spinal nerve roots traverse the subarachnoid space toward the intervertebral foramina, while an adjacent intervertebral disc is shown between vertebral bodies, with a central nucleus pulposus encircled by the annulus fibrosus. Spatial context is clear. Bone, meninges, and neural tissue align in true anatomical relationship. For teaching, a transverse section through the spinal canal is where learners finally understand why an epidural anesthetic is placed outside the dura, while a lumbar puncture enters the subarachnoid space to sample CSF (liquor) without injuring the cord. The same meningeal compartments frame common emergencies, including spinal epidural hematoma compressing the dural sac and cauda equina, and infectious meningitis tracking within CSF circulation.
