Description
Centered within the vertebral foramen, the spinal cord sits posterior to the vertebral body and anterior to the laminae, surrounded by a rim of cerebrospinal fluid in the subarachnoid space. A transverse section of cord anatomy is rendered with the central H-shaped gray matter (anterior and posterior horns) encircled by white matter funiculi, with the central canal at the core. Laterally, paired dorsal and ventral rootlets converge toward the intervertebral foramen, while the dura mater and arachnoid mater outline the cord’s meningeal sleeve within the spinal canal. Segmental vessels accompany the nerve roots, with arterial and venous channels differentiated for clarity of circulation. CSF buoyancy is not an abstract concept here, it explains why the cord remains cushioned during spinal motion and why obstruction of CSF pathways alters intrathecal pressure dynamics.
