Description
Centered within the vertebral canal, the spinal cord is rendered in transverse section with a butterfly-shaped gray matter core surrounded by circumferential white matter. Posterior (dorsal) and anterior (ventral) horns are distinguished around the central canal, which sits at the midline and contains cerebrospinal fluid. Radially, the pia mater invests the cord surface, while CSF fills the subarachnoid space between pia and arachnoid, separating neural tissue from the meningeal envelope; ventral rootlets emerge anterolaterally toward the intervertebral foramen, with dorsal root entry implied posterolaterally. A cross-section like this is the teaching workhorse for correlating tract anatomy with neurologic deficits, because the arrangement of dorsal columns, lateral funiculi, and anterior funiculi predicts the pattern of sensory loss or weakness after spinal cord injury. Clinically, it also clarifies where pathology lives: intramedullary lesions expand the cord and distort the central canal region (as in syringomyelia), while extramedullary compression narrows the subarachnoid CSF cuff first, a detail that matters when reading myelography or MRI for stenosis, tumor, or epidural hematoma.
