Description

Framed in an anterior cutaway of the adult female pelvis, the urinary bladder is opened to reveal the vesical lumen and a discrete cystine calculus resting dependently near the bladder base. Superiorly, the dome (apex) of the bladder projects toward the anterior abdominal wall, while inferiorly the bladder neck funnels into the short female urethra at the internal urethral orifice. Posterior to the bladder base sits the anterior vaginal wall and cervix region, and the trigone occupies the posteroinferior floor between the ureteric orifices and the urethral outlet, a fixed mucosal triangle that contrasts with the more distensible detrusor-lined body. Orientation is clear. Cystine stones matter because they point away from routine metabolic stone disease and toward cystinuria, where impaired renal tubular reabsorption drives high urinary cystine and recurrent calculi that can appear anywhere from kidney to bladder.
