Description
Sectioned renal parenchyma is presented with the fibrous renal capsule investing the outer surface, immediately deep to which lies the renal cortex as a continuous peripheral band. Medial to the cortex, the renal medulla forms conical renal pyramids whose apices (renal papillae) project into minor calyces that merge into major calyces and the renal pelvis, a funnel-shaped collecting region at the renal hilum. The ureter exits inferiorly from the renal pelvis, continuing as the proximal ureter along the medial border. Color differentiation separates cortex, medulla, and collecting system for rapid orientation. Corticomedullary organization is the teaching point here, because it underlies urine concentration, papillary drainage, and the typical pattern of obstruction. A stone lodged at the ureteropelvic junction can dilate the renal pelvis and calyces (hydronephrosis) while leaving the capsule and cortical thickness as key visual cues for chronicity. This cutaway also supports surgical and interventional planning: access for percutaneous nephrostomy or nephrolithotomy is directed through a posterior calyx to reduce vascular injury, and the pyramids help you anticipate where the collecting system sits relative to parenchyma.
