Bisected male kidney in sectional view exposes the renal capsule as a thin, glistening sheath investing the underlying renal parenchyma. Just deep to the capsule, the renal cortex forms a continuous peripheral band that surrounds the medulla, while the medullary pyramids project centrally with their bases oriented toward the cortex and their apices (renal papillae) directed medially toward the collecting system. Minor calyces cup each papilla, coalescing into major calyces that converge into the renal pelvis in the renal sinus, positioned centrally and leading inferiorly toward the proximal ureter. Clear internal topography. Teaching renal physiology is easier when the gross architecture is unambiguous, because the cortex-medulla boundary maps directly onto where filtration and concentration occur along the nephron. This cut also supports clinical discussion of obstructive uropathy: hydronephrosis begins with dilation of the calyces and renal pelvis, progressively effacing papillae and thinning the parenchyma, a pattern that is much easier to explain with the calyceal system in view. Surgeons and interventionalists also use this anatomy when planning percutaneous nephrostomy access, aiming for a posterior calyx to reduce vascular injury while reaching the renal pelvis for drainage.
