Description
Coronal cross section through a male kidney reveals the renal cortex peripherally, enclosing the medulla with its radially oriented renal pyramids that taper toward the renal papillae. Medially, the concave hilum opens into the renal sinus, where the renal pelvis and branching major and minor calyces occupy the central collecting space, continuing inferiorly as the proximal ureter. At the corticomedullary junction, the arcuate vessel plane is implied as a landmark separating cortical labyrinth from the bases of the pyramids. Parenchyma thickness, papillary contours, and the calyceal recesses are all readable in this slice. A sectional view like this is the one most clinicians mentally reference when correlating hematuria, hydronephrosis, and obstructive uropathy with CT urography or ultrasound. Calyceal dilatation begins at the minor calyces and progresses to the renal pelvis, so seeing the papilla-to-calyx relationship helps you explain early versus advanced hydronephrosis and why papillary blunting appears. The renal sinus is also where percutaneous access targets the collecting system, and it is the corridor traversed in many approaches to nephrolithiasis and endourologic intervention.
