Description
Seen from the dorsum of the foot, the dorsal metatarsal veins course distally within the intermetatarsal spaces between adjacent metatarsals, superficial to the dorsal interossei and deep to the skin and superficial fascia. Each channel runs in parallel with its corresponding dorsal metatarsal artery, then converges proximally toward the dorsal venous arch over the metatarsus. Extensor tendons to the toes (extensor digitorum longus and extensor hallucis longus) cross the forefoot longitudinally, forming pale bands that sit anterior to the metatarsals and help orient the viewer to the second through fifth rays. For venipuncture and cannulation on the dorsum of the foot, appreciating the typical spacing of the dorsal metatarsal veins between the metatarsal shafts helps avoid transfixing an adjacent dorsal metatarsal artery or irritating a nearby cutaneous nerve branch.
