Arising from the dorsal venous plexus on the dorsum of the foot, the dorsal digital veins course distally along the dorsal aspects of each toe, running superficial to the extensor tendons as they cross the metatarsophalangeal and interphalangeal joints. Paired channels along adjacent sides of the digits converge into dorsal metatarsal veins that track proximally between the metatarsals, with tributaries passing lateral and medial to the extensor hallucis longus and extensor digitorum longus tendons. Beneath the superficial venous network, the metatarsals and phalanges provide the bony scaffold, while the extensor digitorum brevis and dorsal interossei form a muscular bed separated by fascia and retinacular bands at the ankle.
