Description
Arising from the dorsum of the foot, the dorsal digital arteries course distally along the toes toward the proximal, middle, and distal phalanges, running in close company with the dorsal digital veins and smaller arterioles across the extensor surface. Metatarsals and phalanges form the bony scaffold beneath, while dorsal intrinsic musculature and extensor tendons occupy the superficial plane, with slips passing over the metatarsophalangeal and interphalangeal joints. Medially to laterally, the arterial branches align with each digit and taper as they approach the nail bed region. Landmarks are clear. Dorsal toe perfusion matters when you are correlating surface anatomy with ischemic change, trauma, or postoperative wound healing, because the dorsal digital arteries participate in an anastomotic network with plantar digital arteries and can maintain flow when one channel is compromised. This view supports teaching of why lacerations across the dorsal aspect of the toes can bleed briskly and why careful handling of the dorsal neurovascular bundles helps avoid delayed healing after procedures such as dorsal approaches to the metatarsophalangeal joint or toe fracture fixation.
