Description

Running anteroinferiorly along the anterior thigh, the descending branch of the lateral femoral circumflex artery (ramus descendens arteriae circumflexae femoris lateralis) is traced as a long, relatively straight channel arising from the lateral femoral circumflex system near the femoral triangle. Proximally, it lies lateral to the femoral artery and femoral vein, then courses between rectus femoris (medially) and vastus lateralis (laterally), descending toward the lateral aspect of the knee. Red arterial pathways are contrasted with blue venous return, with the great saphenous vein visible superficially along the medial thigh and leg while deeper veins accompany the femoral vessels. Orthopaedic and trauma teams care about this artery because it supplies much of the anterior and lateral thigh via perforators to vastus lateralis and contributes to the perigenicular anastomosis distally, making it a practical landmark when planning incisions that skirt the intermuscular plane. Its proximal branches also participate in the trochanteric anastomosis around the femoral neck, so injury or ligation can matter during approaches to the hip and when raising an anterolateral thigh (ALT) flap, where the descending branch and its perforators often form the pedicle. This is a workhorse vessel.
