Posteriorly, the internal and external iliac arteries continue as the femoral system into the thigh, with the profunda femoris giving rise to the lateral femoral circumflex artery coursing laterally and wrapping toward the femoral neck near the hip joint. Ascending and transverse branches track deep to the proximal thigh musculature, while distal continuation blends into perforators supplying the lateral compartment. Parallel venous channels, including the femoral and profunda femoris veins with superficial contributions from the great and small saphenous veins, run in blue along the posterior-lateral leg. Relationship is the point. From behind, the lateral femoral circumflex artery is best appreciated as a contributor to the trochanteric anastomosis and the extracapsular arterial ring supplying the femoral head and neck, territory that becomes clinically tense in femoral neck fractures and hip dislocation. Orthopedic approaches around the greater trochanter, as well as peritrochanteric osteotomies, risk injury to the ascending branch and its perforators, with hematoma or compromised perfusion as the practical consequence.
