Description

Running inferiorly from the thoracolumbar junction, the lumbar vertebrae (L1 to L5) are rendered with vertebral bodies that enlarge in a superior-to-inferior sequence, ending at the lumbosacral junction where L5 meets the sacral base. A left lateral perspective places the lumbar spinous processes posteriorly while the vertebral bodies and intervertebral discs sit anteriorly, letting you track disc spaces from the upper lumbar levels down to L5–S1. Distally, the sacrum (highlighted in blue) forms a triangular continuation of the vertebral column, its promontory projecting anterosuperiorly relative to the fused sacral segments. Teaching the lumbar spine without a clean lateral profile is a recipe for confusion at L4–L5 and L5–S1.
