Positioned in the left upper quadrant, the spleen appears deep to the left costal margin, lateral to the gastric fundus and posterolateral to the tail of the pancreas, with its smooth diaphragmatic surface conforming to the inner contour of ribs 9 to 11. A notched anterior border marks the superior aspect near the splenic hilum, while the visceral surface faces anteromedially toward the stomach and left kidney. Semi-transparent rendering of the abdominal viscera allows the spleen to be read in context against the stomach, liver, small intestine, and the retroperitoneal kidneys. Orientation stays true to anatomical position. As a lymphoid organ with reticuloendothelial function, the spleen is a key landmark for correlating peritoneal spaces and vascular anatomy, from the splenic artery along the superior border of the pancreas to the splenic vein draining toward the portal system.
