Description
Running superficially in the anterior cervical region, the sternohyoid appears as a slender infrahyoid strap muscle coursing superiorly from the posterior surface of the manubrium sterni and medial clavicle to the body of the hyoid bone. A lateral neck perspective places it medial and deep to the sternocleidomastoid, with a thin fascial layer and skin rendered semi-transparent to keep surface anatomy legible. Posterior to the infrahyoid plane, the cervical vertebrae align in profile, while inferiorly the first ribs, clavicle, and the superior thoracic aperture frame the muscle’s origin. Bony landmarks anchor orientation. Clinically, the sternohyoid matters because it is part of the infrahyoid “strap” layer encountered early in midline neck surgery, then separated to reach the thyroid gland, trachea, and laryngeal framework. This relationship underpins routine approaches for tracheostomy, thyroidectomy, and emergency cricothyrotomy teaching, where the strap muscles are retracted laterally to expose the airway safely while respecting the anterior jugular venous region and the investing fascia planes. Its inferior attachment at the manubrium also helps learners connect swallowing mechanics to movements across the cervicothoracic junction.
