Description
Along the anterolateral neck, the sternohyoid appears as a narrow infrahyoid strap muscle running superiorly from the posterior surface of the manubrium and adjacent medial clavicle to the inferior border of the hyoid bone. In lateral profile it lies superficial to the laryngeal framework, crossing anterior to the thyroid cartilage and continuing toward the hyoid as it approaches the suprahyoid region beneath the mandible and teeth. Posterior to it, the cervical vertebrae stack in clear alignment, while the thyroid and cricoid cartilages sit anterior to the pharynx and superior to the upper tracheal rings. Clean anatomy. Functionally, sternohyoid depresses the hyoid after swallowing and helps steady the hyoid-laryngeal complex during phonation, so its course matters when teaching hyolaryngeal excursion and airway protection.
