Description
Arising within the frontal scalp and forehead, the supraorbital vein is traced as it descends toward the superior orbital margin, running superficial to the frontalis and in close company with the supraorbital artery and supraorbital nerve. Near the supraorbital notch or foramen, tributary venules from the forehead converge and direct blood inferiorly toward the angular vein at the medial canthus, with lateral communications toward the superficial temporal venous system. Surrounding it, the orbicularis oculi encircles the palpebral fissure, while the corrugator supercilii and procerus occupy the glabellar region just medial and inferior to the vessel’s frontal origin. Orientation is straightforward. Superior is scalp, inferior is orbit. This head and neck view matters because the supraorbital vein sits in the corridor where superficial facial drainage interfaces with the orbit, and it is a practical surface landmark when discussing periorbital edema, forehead hematoma, and the venous spread of infection from the “danger triangle” toward orbital and cavernous sinus pathways via the angular and ophthalmic veins. Its relationship to the supraorbital neurovascular bundle also frames common procedural concerns, including bruising after supraorbital nerve block and vascular injury during brow lift, upper blepharoplasty, and endoscopic forehead approaches. Students often miss how close these structures remain as the vein crosses the superior orbital rim. This clarifies it.
