Description
Sagittal-lateral sectioning through the cranium and vertebral column exposes the calvaria and cranial base superior to a continuous cut surface through the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar vertebral bodies. Within the cranial cavity, the cerebrum lies anterior and superior to the cerebellum, while the brainstem descends inferiorly to become the spinal cord at the foramen magnum. Posterior to the vertebral bodies, the vertebral canal encloses the cord, with intervertebral discs interposed between adjacent vertebrae and segmental spinal nerve roots coursing laterally toward the intervertebral foramina. A clear midline relationship. Clinically, this side section clarifies how space-occupying lesions along the neuraxis can produce coupled intracranial and spinal findings, for example tonsillar descent in Chiari I malformation with cervicomedullary compression at the craniocervical junction. The view also maps common sites of degenerative change, where disc height loss and posterior disc bulge can narrow the spinal canal or foramina, correlating with radiculopathy at the level of the exiting nerve root. For teaching neuroanatomy, the continuity from brainstem to spinal cord is explicit, and the posterior fossa relationships are easier to read than in isolated brain plates.
