Description
Arcing in profile, the vertebral column is presented in lateral section with the lumbar vertebrae (L1 to L5) and the sacrum emphasized in blue as they transition into the fused sacral segments. Intervertebral discs separate the lumbar vertebral bodies, their heights contributing to the lumbar lordosis before the curve reverses toward the sacral promontory. Superior to the lumbar region, the thoracic kyphosis and cervical lordosis are also readable as continuous curvatures, giving context for overall sagittal alignment. The coccygeal tip sits inferior to the sacrum at the caudal end of the column. Sagittal balance lives and dies in the lateral view. This perspective supports teaching and clinical discussion of common lumbar problems such as disc degeneration and spondylolisthesis, where loss of disc height or anterior translation alters the lumbar lordotic arc and shifts load to the facet joints and pars interarticularis.
