Description
Cut through the cranium and upper vertebral column in a mid-sagittal plane, the calvaria and cranial base frame the cerebral hemispheres as they rest on the anterior and middle cranial fossae, with the falx cerebri implied along the midline. Anteriorly, the nasal cavity and oral cavity sit inferior to the frontal bone, while the maxilla and mandible define the facial skeleton with dentition visible. Posterior and inferior to the cerebrum, the cerebellum occupies the posterior cranial fossa, and the brainstem (midbrain through pons to medulla oblongata) continues caudally as the cervical spinal cord within the vertebral canal, bordered by vertebral bodies and intervertebral discs.
