Description
Sectioned lumbar vertebrae are presented in lateral profile, with stacked vertebral bodies separated by intervertebral discs and the posterior elements projecting dorsally as spinous processes. Cancellous (trabecular) bone fills the vertebral bodies centrally, bounded by a cortical shell, while the vertebral arches extend posteriorly to complete the margins of the vertebral canal. Intervertebral discs sit between adjacent endplates, their position anterior to the facet (zygapophysial) joints reflecting the load-sharing arrangement typical of the lumbar column. Transverse processes project laterally as broad levers for paraspinal muscle attachment. A lateral section through the lumbar spine is the clearest way to teach how compressive loads transfer from the nucleus pulposus and annulus fibrosus across the cartilaginous endplates into trabecular bone, the same pathway implicated in Schmorl nodes and osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures. Posterior disc contour relative to the vertebral canal is also a practical landmark when explaining posterolateral disc herniation and the resulting radiculopathy pattern at L4-L5 or L5-S1, where the traversing nerve root is often the one affected. This is a common pain generator.
