Description
Positioned on the lateral surface of the male auricle, the antitragicus muscle spans between the antitragus and the caudal portion of the antihelix, forming a short, obliquely oriented intrinsic slip deep to the auricular skin. Anterior to it lie the tragus and the entrance to the external acoustic meatus, while posterior and superior contours are defined by the antihelix and its adjacent conchal bowl. The fiber direction typically courses superoposterior from the antitragal eminence toward the antihelical region. Small, but specific. Orientation of the antitragicus matters because intrinsic auricular muscles are easily conflated with the extrinsic auricular muscles (auricularis anterior, superior, posterior) in teaching and in operative notes. A lateral perspective helps separate cartilage landmarks from the thin muscular slips that can be encountered during otoplasty, conchal setback, or reconstruction after trauma, where dissection planes ride close to the perichondrium and the overlying soft tissue envelope. It also supports discussion of regional motor supply from the facial nerve and why focal weakness or scarring can subtly change auricular contour without affecting hearing.
