Description
Positioned on the anterior aspect of the male auricle, the antitragicus muscle is shown deep to the skin as it spans from the antitragus toward the cauda helicis, forming a small muscular bridge across the intertragic notch region. The antitragus sits inferior and posterior to the tragus, and the antitragicus lies superficial to the auricular cartilage but deep to the cutaneous layer, with fibers oriented obliquely along the posterior surface of the antitragus. Surrounding landmarks of the pinna, including the helix and antihelix with their intervening scapha, frame the muscle’s location relative to the conchal bowl. Small anatomy. Precise placement. Because intrinsic auricular muscles are thin and variably developed, an anterior perspective that keeps the skin layer in context helps clarify what is actually accessible in dissection and what remains obscured without careful elevation of the auricular skin. Clinically, this region matters during periauricular approaches and otoplasty, where subcutaneous undermining, cartilage scoring, or suture placement near the antitragus and intertragic notch can disturb small muscle fibers and their local neurovascular supply, contributing to postoperative tenderness, contour irregularities, or altered sensation. The same surface anatomy also guides safe placement of perichondrial sutures and local anesthetic infiltration around the tragal and antitragal complex.
